About the artist
Mr Bergstrom is an artist from Portsmouth who has been living in Coventry for 7 years. They’ve been fascinated by the city architecture since moving up – the similarities between the cities made them immediately feel at home, despite the differences from moving from the only island city to the most landlocked city in the UK.
They often use the architecture around them as inspiration for work, particularly those post-war buildings often derided as ugly, trying to show the beauty in the form of the functional. They want to inspire people to look again at their local world and see the part those buildings play in the landscape.
Currently, their obsession is The Elephant Building – the triangulated form, the choice of materials and the space underneath. They noticed how this reflects sound while walking underneath one day, amplifying engine noises, and wondered how that space would reflect different compositions.
The Elephant Building was part of Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre, built in 1976 as an add-on to Coventry Baths. It was designed by Terence Gregory and Harry Noble, part of Coventry City Council’s architect’s department, as an abstracted elephant form. Its distinctive grey body comes from the zinc panels used as cladding.
